Utengule Estates cultivates only about 40% of its land with coffee, while the rest consists of fully stocked woodland, wetland, forest, rivers and valleys. These ecological zones contain a very large biodiversity and are particularly interesting because the dry areas feature a very different bio structure than the wet areas along rivers and in the swamps.
Utengule takes great pride of this rich stock of trees, flowers and fruits and makes every effort to preserve it for future generations.
The integration of coffee fields into the original biosphere, creates a balanced situation and the farm operates with a minimal amount of pesticides and fungicides. Applications of agro-chemicals are only made if a pest or disease surpasses an economic threshold and becomes an economic threat to production. Workers are bound to wear protective gear.
Utengule follows strictly the employment legislation of Tanzania, pays fair wages and ensures social contributions. In good years, employees are paid a crop bonus at the end of the year. Utengule fosters good neighborhood relations with the surrounding villages, which is foremost based on fair employment of people. However, Utengule makes further efforts and is contributing to the renovation or reconstruction of primary schools in the vicinity of the farm. Education in rural areas is the key to development and betterment of the economy, therefore the efforts of Utengule concentrates fully on improvement of schools.
The concept is that of partnership with the villages, whereby Utengule contributes with hardware, transport and supervision and the villages provide workmanship and labor. In 2012, Utengule, in partnership with Peter and Maggy Kapp as well as Mahlkönig, La Marzocco and Probat, rebuilt the Muvwa and Ndugumbi schools. Children in these two villages now have good classrooms for a better learning environment.
We will continue renovating schools and if you wish to donate to this important work, please write to Monika and we shall revert as soon as possible. Through this website we shall update you of the ongoing projects. Thank you!
The village of Itimba and Utengule Ltd. are expressing their greatful thanks to Maggy and Peter Kapp for their generous sponsorship of the Itimba 2013 project. The project was implemented by Utengule Ltd. and managed by Manuel Siegrist.
